Why Do We Do What We Do?

To experience ourselves as physical beings in a physical world, SURVIVAL must be our most basic desire. When we decide life is a matter of SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST, we inject unnatural and unnecessary elements of fear, competition and discrimination into the mix. Instead of developing ideas and strategies for everyone’s survival, we compete to become one of the few who is “worthy” of survival.

When we frame life in such hostile terms, love, wisdom and cooperation as a means to survival get thrown out the window to be replaced by secrecy, contempt and ruthless deceit. Why do we do this to ourselves? Are we bored? Is life so dull we need to spice it up with lies, exploitation and violence? Or, do we think we’re so bad we need to be punished?

What kind of world do we want to create and live in? What kind of people do we want to be and what kind of life do we want to live? What kind of world do we want our children and their children to create and live in? How do we want them to be treated and how do we want them to treat others? Asking myself these questions brought me back to The Golden Rule:

Do Unto Others

The Golden Rule says, Do unto others AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM do unto you. It doesn’t say, Do unto others BEFORE  they do unto you, although this is the way some people like to interpret it. The first statement is creative and the other is reactive. Let’s stop reacting to life and get busy creating it. Treating each other the way we’d like to be treated, instead of treating each other the way we’re being treated, gives us a better chance of creating a safer and saner world. what do you think?
